What Do Pelvic Floor Physical Therapists Do?
Assessment:
  • Direct assessment of pelvic floor musculature for strength/endurance/tone/trigger points. Digital vaginal/rectal exams performed as indicated with patient consent.
  • Orthopedic and neurological assessment of lumbar/pelvis/hip joints.
Treatment:
  • Bladder/Bowel diary, Bladder/Bowel habit retraining, neuromuscular re-education, manual therapy – soft tissue/joint mobilization, therapeutic exercise, home exercise program
  • Education: constipation prevention, dietary adjustments re: fiber/fluid intake
  • Biofeedback w/internal (vaginal or rectal) or external sensors
  • Modalities as indicated: E-Stim w/internal or external sensors, ultrasound, heat/cold, TENS
  • Balloon manometry - for bowel/rectal disorders such as fecal incontinence and/or chronic constipation

Patients Appropriate for Referral – Female and Male
  • Bladder: incontinence, urgency, dysuria, interstitial cystitis
  • Bowel: incontinence, IBS, constipation
  • Organ Prolapse: Stage I or II - best results
  • Pelvic/SI joint pain, coccydynia, pudendal neuralgia, dyspareunia, vaginismus, vulvodynia, pre/post-partum complications including pubic symphysis disruption, diastasis recti
  • Pre and post Uro-Gynecological Surgeries, prostate surgeries

  • Please include diagnoses on referral and use comments for patient problem info
*Please educate patients on what they can expect from therapy i.e. limited vaginal exam
Patients NOT Appropriate for Referral**
  • Active Infection
  • Lymphedema
  • Osteoporosis as a primary diagnosis
  • Cognitive impairments – unable to follow commands
  • Unmanaged psychological disorders
Pre-Natal Group Program - Currently at WCHC and MTZ. At PHC prenatal groups a therapist is visiting prenatal groups.
  • 2 session group with individual musculoskeletal screen- focusing on pelvic and basic core exercise, correct body mechanics and safe movement strategies during pregnancy, laboring positions, breathing/relaxation, home exercise with video . Ongoing therapy available if needed
  • Refer with above noted referral and state ‘prenatal exercise group’
